TASKS
- Designing Custom Boxes for Non-Boxed Items
Our task is to select two non-boxed objects from everyday environments. The size of the objects is between 2mm and 5mm. After consideration, I chose breath freshener spray and passport holder. Because the material for laser cutting is about 200gsm art card, it should not be too heavy. These two items are what I use every day, so I prioritized designing boxes for them.
First item: Breath Freshener Spray
Width: 2.4mm
Height: 9.4mm
Breath Freshener Spray

Reason for choosing this item:
- Breath freshener sprays are usually portable products that come in fragile sealed bags with no way to prevent the liquid from spilling.
Second item: Passport Holder
Width: 10mm
Height: 14.8mm

Passport Holder
Reason for choosing this item:
- Not used every day, needs to be stored properly to avoid dust accumulation
- Lovely products need packaging to protect them

Breath Freshener Measurements and Prototype Sketch
With this sketch, I started to draw a prototype in real size on Adobe Illustrator. According to Shamsul Hamimi's demonstration, we began to divide the box into two layers for drawing, one layer for Outline and the other for Insideline. At the beginning, I mistakenly overlapped some lines in Outline and Insideline. After Shamsul Hamimi's feedback, I corrected this problem in time so that I would avoid many unnecessary mistakes in the later process.

Then, I did Laser Cut & Box Making. After determining the die-cutting line, we went to the laser cutting studio to make the box. Since the machine in the school broke down, I had to go outside the school to find a laser cutting studio. For the material, we used Art Card of about 200gsm.After finishing, I continued to test the box to see if it would fit the Breath freshener spray box.

The Breath Freshener stores very well once folded and put into the box, and there is enough space for the Breath Freshener to stay in the box without it moving.

- Passport Holder Box
At the same time, I also noted down the dimensions of the Passport Holder and drew the die cut lines to test as a prototype. After measuring the dimensions, I sketched out the idea of the box. I wanted the lid to be embedded in the gap of the paper underneath, so that it would be more stable and not easy to open accidentally.

I continued by drawing a full-size prototype of the Passport Holder in Adobe Illustrator.

Feedback
-Week6
To make a box in AI, you must separate the inner and outer lines into two layers. When designing the box, allow for the loss of the box when it is folded.
Reflections
-Experience
This task was a fun hands-on job that involved a lot of measuring, cutting, and folding. It was also the first time I realized that laser printing was a very efficient tool.
-Observation
One important stage in building a box. It's critical to understand how much leeway to allow for measures in order to ensure that the products fit the box comfortably without being overly snug.
-Findings
When working in Adobe Illustrator it is important to be unit specific and not to be careless with the layers. When designing the cut lines of a box, there should be no overlap between the inner and outer lines.
