Task 3 Type Exploration and Application

Description

Synthesize and apply the learning in the aforementioned tasks using the information and experience we have gained from the exercises and tasks, the knowledge we have accrued from the lectures and our own reading (online and in library books), and our familiarity with the various software applications that have been covered so far in the program. Make sure our selections for the successful completion of our last assignment are informed and guided by the knowledge we have received. In the field of our interest, such as graphic design, animation, new media, entertainment design, or any other relevant field that does not necessarily reflect our area of expertise, create a typeface that is meant to solve a wider problem or to be a part of a solution.

Final product: A created typeface with all applications (.ttf).

Ideation and Research

According to Mr. VINOD’s feedback, the first is that the layout problem does not exist in the fonts, and the third idea is that the layout of the magazine is too messy. Because I personally also like studying constellations, I decided to choose the fourth idea - the font of stars as my design direction.

Experiment

I started by drawing the shape of a star using the shape tool, thinking that all fonts could be designed around the angular shape of the star.

After Mr. VINOD's suggestion, I must first draw with the pen tool and then outline the fonts. Some of my fonts (for example: T, N) are generated directly with the shape tool, which is not allowed. Secondly, some of the font's lowercase needs to be below the baseline, which I overlooked.

Finally, I imported the designed font into FontLab8.

Presentation

Requirements
 4/5 artworks &1024 x 1024px, 300ppi.

After the font design is completed, 4/5 works need to be created. I did some experimenting in Adobe Illustrator 2024.

Font Application

The purpose of creating this font is that I hope to put the font on some daily necessities. So I started thinking about what kind of design would be more life-like.

Feedback

Week9:
General: The ideal needs to be modified Specific: The first thought is a problem of text layout, not a problem of words. The poster needs more detail.

Week10: General: The font design is irregular.
Specific: There are too many stars in the design and it needs to be standardized.

Week11: General: Some letters need to be lowercase than the baseline.
Specific: The lowercase letters "f,j,g,l" need to be adjusted below the baseline. The symbols are wrong and need to be re-observed. You cannot use the shape tool to create fonts, you can only use the pen tool. Some letters are too sharp and need to be adjusted.

Week12:
General: If the font format is wrong, you should not use the pen tool directly.
Specific: Fonts should be formatted and imported into "FontLab7".
Week13:
General:Some letters are in the wrong position. Specific: The letter "l" should be on the baseline, wrong placement, other font posters are fine.

Reflections

Experience
From this project, I realized the sense of accomplishment of designing my own fonts. At the same time, I also realized that I needed to observe all fonts before designing them. Some fonts cannot be ignored below the baseline.

Observations
I found that my font must be merged with the path before Fontalb, otherwise the words will be messy when typed.
Findings
I think this is a very interesting experience. I designed my own fonts and designed clothes to print, and I experienced the joy of design.

Further Reading

Heller, S. and Lita, T. (2011). Typography Sketchbooks.
Princeton Architectural Press.
This book, which features the manuscripts, notes, and other creative materials of numerous designers and font makers, mostly describes the notebook and creative process of font design. This book, in my opinion, will not bore readers and is especially inspirational. The book also documents my thought process during the fonts' conception and formation.
