Week 1:Typographic system

A structural system is the foundation of any design.
They include:
  1. Axial
  2. Radial
  3. Dilatational
  4. Random
  5. Grid
  6. Modular
  7. Transitional
  8. Bilateral

     Analyze:

  1. Axial system: All components are arranged to the left or right of a single, optionally straight axis.
  2. Radial system: Focus extends to all components
  3. Dilatational system:From a central point, all elements radiate outward in a circular motion. It might be easy or difficult.
  4. Random system: Elements don't seem to be connected or arranged in any particular way.
  5. Grid system: A divisional structure that is both vertical and horizontal.
  6. Modular system: A collection of arbitrary components put together in standardised units. Despite not being in a bigger grid, the unit can be placed at random.
  7. Transitional system: Multilayer banding in an unofficial scheme. In order to establish hierarchy, distinctions in size and width are crucial.
  8. Bilateral system: On a single axis, the entire text is symmetrically ordered.

Typographic Systems: “An understanding of systems of visual organization gives the designer and in-depth knowledge of the design process. The traditional ties that bind design education and the visual process to the rigid horizontal and vertical grid systems of letterpress are no longer the sole means of order. It is possible for the designer to use a more fluid means to create typographic messages through the eight systems of typographic organization. These systems expand the visual language of typographic communication and invite the reader into the text.” (Elam, 2007)

Before starting, I tried to find inspiration on Pinterest.

Task 1:

Task 1 we need to make square posters based on 8 printing systems.
  • Use any of the 3 headers in each system.
  • Line spacing, tracking. Point size should be between 8-12pt.
  • The level at which information is placed.
  • Axial system

After the guidance of Mr. Vinods, I discovered that there was a problem with my radial system. The space on both sides of me was unbalanced and needed improvement. So I resumed my mission.

After Mr. Vinods’ feedback, my first result was not messy enough. So I gave it a second try.

Task 2:TYPE & PLAY 1

We were asked to look for type, choosing man-made objects (chairs, glass, etc.) or structures (buildings
objects) or natural things (people, scenery, leaves, plants, bushes, clouds, hills, rivers, etc.). And make sure the image doesn't contain many different elements.

After feedback from Mr. Vinods, I found that my font lacked details. The image I chose for reference had many structural details. Adding the details of the font made the font more interesting.I decided to give it a second try.In this second attempt, I added structural elements and details to the lantern, taking in feedback from the previous attempt.

But I still felt that the grid element was a bit complicated and easy to make people feel complicated, so I decided to simplify my font to a certain extent.

TYPE & PLAY 2

A few things to remember:
  • JPEG image of A4 size; - Use one of the ten typefaces
  • 4-5 words, sentences, or quotes
  •  Pick one word to be highlighted
After completing the final form of the word, we must combine it with the visual impact of their choice. The goal is to increase Strong/Support interaction between selected graphics and typeface forms. To create a symbiotic relationship, the words and image must be entwined.

Because my font is based on lanterns that contain traditional Chinese elements, I plan to use Chinese classical architecture as the background of the poster, which I think fits my text style well.
So I started picking out my background images on Pinterest.

Feedback
Week2
General: Some items are not messy enough. Not complete enough.
Specific: There is a bug in the Axial system. The middle line is unnecessary. From a composition point of view, this is not the best arrangement. Balance and space need to be considered. The second achievement of the Radial system can be retained, but the first achievement cannot be continued. The Random system is not chaotic enough, and it is relatively neat and cannot achieve the effect of the Random system.

Week3
General: Not enough details, details need to be added.
Specific: The font needs to add details at the corners and tails, as well as some structures of the lantern in the prototype picture, and continue to adjust.

Week4
General: Three draft items require continued revision.
Specific: The fonts of the three draft projects were not balanced and needed to be found, and a lot of revisions were required.

Reflection
Experience:
In this module, I learned the systematic text layout methods of various modules. I think this is a good framework, which will make my future design projects less confusing.

Observation:
There are many elements that can be combined with text, waiting to be discovered slowly.

Findings:
After designing the font, be sure to merge the paths.

Puhalla, D (2018). Layout Workbook: Revised and Updated : A Real-world Guide to Building Pages in Graphic Design. Princeton Edition: Revised and updated. Gloucester, Massachusetts : Rockport Publishers.

The book is full of helpful tips on how to set up material, choose fonts and colours, and structure pages in an efficient manner. The book's material gives graphic designers a greater understanding of how to develop appealing, understandable, and well-organized page layouts. This book seems like a wonderful resource for people who are unsure about typographic design.
