TASK 2 / Typographic Exploration & Communication

"In this task you will be asked to express typographically the content provided in a 2-page editorial spread (200mm x 200mm per page). Choose 1 from the 3 text options provided. No images are allowed. However, some very minor graphical elements, i.e. line, shade, etc. might be allowed."

Research

I was a bit lost at first, so before I started this exercise I decided to look for some article layouts on Pinterest for inspiration.

Visual Reference

I decided to read my selection "A code to build on and live by".

To help me better comprehend the context of the text and, I believe, to help me express the text more properly, I also opted to read the original text of the text I chose, "A code to build on and live by."

Initial Process
(layout sketches, type expression exploration & text formatting)

After researching, and reading, I tried to draw a rough layout for the next step of the design.

Quick Layout Sketches

I decided to continue using Illustrator first to explore different ways of expressing the title.

Production Process

Initial Attempt

After Mr.'s feedback, I adjusted my font selection, dropped the bold font, and changed to the Regular font. And the pattern in the center of the icon is removed.

Second Adjustment After Feedback

I move on to text formatting. I work on the body text first, experimenting with different fonts and kerning.

Text Formatting

First Final Attempt

For the text layout, I used the style of stairs to express "Bulid". I think "Bulid" is built layer by layer. So I didn't consider other text layouts.

Layouts

After formatting the text, I started exploring different layouts. ......

I tried both layouts and saw which gave a better viewing experience.

Initial Layouts

Initial Layouts

Compared with the second layout, I prefer the first layout, because the title has a "Build", which I think is a concept of increasing little by little, similar to stairs, so I think the design from low to high like stairs is better.

After Mr. Vinod's suggestion, I reworked my heading style. I need to find an expandable word for what he means. Mr. Vinod showed me some examples and I got some inspiration.

Feedback

week6 General Feedback:There is an error in the text layout that needs to be modified, and the text spacing is strange. Specific Feedback: The earth in the middle is unnecessary and needs to be removed. The text does not need to use a stroke, just use the corresponding bold font directly.

week7 General Feedback:Italics are not a good choice, use regular as much as possible. Specific Feedback:The design of the title is somewhat incapable of expressing the meaning, and needs to be redesigned to express the meaning of "Build".

FURTHER READINGS

Samara, T (2018). Letterforms : Typeface Design From Past to
Future.

I chose this book recommended by Mr. Vinod as I love fonts and wanted to know more about letterforms and font history. The book begins with a detailed history of typography, proceeds to delve into the formation of letters, and from there, examines typefaces, concluding with a summary of some of the trends of the past two decades. This is a work that will be of great interest to graphic designers, but also to ordinary laymen who want to learn more about the subject. I certainly found it interesting and, as you'd expect from a book on the subject, the pages are beautifully laid out.
